Welcome to the official web site of West Greenwich, Rhode Island.

West Greenwich is located in Kent County and is a large rural town of 51 square miles.  It is one of the least densely populated communities in the State with roughly 6000 residents.  It has one of the highest percentages of permanent open space with 47% of the land in town preserved; including Arcadia State Park, URI/W.Alton Jones Campus and the Big River Management Area.  The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society and the West Greenwich Land Trust also have protected several large parcels, the latest being the 1600 acre Tillinghast Preserve.

Along with being one of the smallest and most rural Rhode Island towns, West Greenwich enjoys an active business community along the I-95 corridor and is home to many large businesses such as Amgen, Centrex, Conneaut and the Centre of New England.

West Greenwich continues to maintain the rural character and independent spirit that has made the town a great place to live for over 260 years.

Message from Police Chief Ramsay,
As we all know, today marks the first day back to school for students in the Exeter West/ Greenwich School system.   I would like to go over some safety concerns with you; First, I would ask that we all use caution when driving as our children will be at bus stops and some may be walking to and from school.
I also would like to inform you that this is the time of year when house breaks are on the rise.  This normally happens when the children first go back to school, because the people who commit these breaks know houses normally are vacant during the day, with parents working and the kids in school.  We experienced our first house break of the season today, it occurred on Breakheart Hill Road.  The homeowner had an alarm system activated and the would-be-burglar(s), who had kicked in the front door, fled without taking anything from the home.  Our surrounding communities have also been experiencing house breaks recently, in these cases the suspects are pushing window air conditioners into the home and gaining access.  These burglars are looking for jewelry and other small items which they can sell for quick cash.  Please do not keep any of these items in locations easy to be located, such as jewelry boxes, in plain sight.  I am also asking that you assist the police department by being the eyes and ears in your neighborhood.  Please report any suspicious activity to the police department when it is happening by calling us directly (401) 397-7191 or 911. It is our pleasure to serve you and thank you for your assistance in keeping our community safe.
Chief Richard Ramsay

Message Regarding Fire/Rescue Grant:
On July 25th, the US Department of Homeland Security, through its’ Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awarded a total of $762,450.00 to Exeter Fire Company #1 for a regional project for the purpose of purchasing new Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (Scott-Air-Packs).  I am proud to say that West Greenwich Fire and Rescue, and Hianloland Fire and Rescue both worked with Exeter Fire Company #1 and Exeter Fire Company #2 for the last several months to apply for, and secure this fantastic grant. All 4 companies will be purchasing all new, state-of-the-art breathing apparatus, to replace all existing breathing apparatus, for every riding position on each fire truck.  While there is a 5% matching cost requirement for each department, this is truly a windfall for all of the departments involved, who are all guilty of utilizing outdated breathing apparatus.  I believe that this is one of the top 5 highest awards nationwide, out of hundreds presented this year.
Chief Brian Hoxsie
